Plot
Julien Sorel is born into a poor family in the French countryside. He is a bright and ambitious young man, and he dreams of rising above his station in life. He studies hard and eventually wins a scholarship to a prestigious seminary. At the seminary, Julien excels in his studies and quickly becomes a favorite of the bishop. The bishop takes Julien under his wing and helps him to secure a position as a tutor in the household of the Marquis de la Mole.
Julien quickly becomes a favorite of the marquis and his family. He is intelligent, charming, and ambitious. However, Julien's ambition soon leads him into trouble. He falls in love with the marquis's daughter, Mathilde, and the two of them begin a secret affair. Julien's affair with Mathilde is discovered, and he is forced to flee.
