Milton's Early Life and Education

John Milton was born on December 9, 1608, in London. His father, also named John, was a prosperous scrivener and composer. Young Milton received a rigorous education, first at St. Paul's School and later at Christ's College, Cambridge. At Cambridge, Milton excelled in his studies, particularly in Latin and Greek literature. He also developed a deep love for music, which would later influence his poetry.

Early Poetic Career

After leaving Cambridge, Milton embarked on a literary career. His early works include the pastoral masque L'Allegro and its companion piece, Il Penseroso. These poems, written in contrasting styles, explore the themes of joy and contemplation. In 1637, Milton published his most ambitious work to date, Comus, a masque that allegorically celebrates chastity and virtue.

Political and Religious Activism

In the mid-17th century, England was embroiled in political and religious turmoil. Milton became actively involved in the Puritan cause, supporting the Parliament against the Crown. He also advocated for religious toleration and the separation of church and state. His controversial prose works, such as Areopagitica, defended freedom of speech and the right to dissent.

'Paradise Lost': Milton's Magnum Opus

In 1667, after the restoration of the monarchy, Milton published his greatest work, Paradise Lost. This epic poem, consisting of over 12,000 lines of blank verse, tells the story of Adam and Eve's fall from grace in the Garden of Eden. Milton's masterful use of language, symbolism, and allegory created a work that is both awe-inspiring and profoundly moving.

Later Life and Works

Following the publication of Paradise Lost, Milton continued to write poetry and prose, although his eyesight had begun to fail. His later works include Paradise Regained, an epic poem that explores the temptation of Jesus Christ, and Samson Agonistes, a dramatic tragedy that tells the story of the biblical hero.

Legacy and Influence

John Milton's impact on English literature and thought is immeasurable. His works have been translated into numerous languages and continue to be studied and admired around the world. Milton's influence can be seen in the writings of Romantic poets such as William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, as well as in the works of modernists such as T.S. Eliot and Ezra Pound.

The Cambridge Companion to Milton provides a comprehensive overview of Milton's life, works, and legacy. Written by a team of leading Milton scholars, this companion offers a rich and nuanced understanding of one of the most influential figures in English literature.
