The earthquake, known as the Great San Francisco Earthquake, lasted for a harrowing 45 to 60 seconds, causing widespread damage and triggering raging fires that consumed much of the city's downtown. It is estimated that over 3,000 people lost their lives, and more than 250,000 were left homeless.
